The School of Architecture of the University of Puerto Rico at Río Piedras (UPRRP), the College of Business Administration, and the College of Engineering of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM) joined efforts to participate in the United States Department of Energy sponsored 2007 Solar Decathlon competition. The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) team consists of an interdisciplinary group of ninety seven (97) qualified students with academic backgrounds in architecture, business administration, civil engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and mechanical engineering. The team of students is led by a business professor who serves as the project manager. Additional collaborators include a board of competent faculty members with expertise in architectural and interior design, communications, thermal building design, solar thermal systems, photovoltaic (PV) systems, and low energy structural building design. The UPR team endorses the same strategic plan as the 2005 UPR team competition, and includes a mission statement, a team logo, and a team motto. The team’s primary mission is to create public awareness about the sun’s potential as a technological, renewable, clean, and feasible energy source that satisfies humanity’s present and future power needs. Using the living cell as a key design concept, the UPR team has developed a habitable and comfortable solar-powered house that functions efficiently in different climates. Our solar house confirms that energy efficiency, solar design, and sustainability are practical options for efficient living dwellings. Close collaboration amongst the five sub-teams of students has maintained the project’s activities balanced and cohesive. Our 2007 edition of the solar house is the gateway to advanced design and enhanced use of renewable energy alternatives. |
